4 Easy-to-Use Research Techniques for Beginning Genealogists

There are two types of genealogy researchers.  Of course there's the dedicated and perfectly organized researcher who can locate and produce any file in a matter of nanoseconds.  Unfortunately I don't fall into that category.  I regularly lose files, my coffee cup, and occasionally the neighbor's cat under the stack of papers piled on my desk.  We're the "creative" researchers who dig in when the mood strikes (after two months of searching for the information we've already gathered).  And yes, we need some help!

Rose or Skunk Cabbage?

What does your Surname say about You?

"What's in a name?  That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet…"  We've all heard the poetic phrase by Shakespeare and have learned that who we are isn’t defined by our name.  Or is it?

Surnames, as we know them, are the link that chains us to our family tree.  Our identity is indeed genetically linked to our ancestors, so maybe the poetry of the great bard isn't as concrete as our literature instructors would like us to think.

About Us

I have been researching my family tree for over 20 years and found that there was a lot of information on the web that helped me find my ancestors and uncover my family heritage.

Family Tree Research – Don’t Be Discouraged

Sometimes Family Tree research can be very discouraging.

We send out letters, make phone calls trying to find that elusive photo or date.

Everyone politely offers to help by sending you a copy or looking up that date in their Family Bible.

But then you wait...and wait...and wait!

Don't be discouraged. People are very busy these days with work, kids, parents, and other family commitments.

Last Name Origin - Tracing Your Family

You probably have an idea about your last name origin. Your parents and grandparents recited stories of your families' emigration. You may have only had a brief recollection of these stories; but now you think that it's time to thoroughly trace the origins of your ancestors and record their names and stories for future generations. But where do you start? Your task is to uncover those bits of information, one name at a time, so future generations can recognize your family's heritage and the lives they led so long ago.
