I have been researching tools, tips and techniques on the internet and was amazed to find all of the new and incredible tools that are at our fingertips. We all know about the free search tools that are available. And many of us subscribe to services that provide access to huge databases. But when you first start your family tree research it's difficult to know how and where to start.
One of the newer tools that is growing in popularity is "YouTube". This widely used site seemed to only have a few genealogy videos in the past. But over the last few months the number and variety of genealogy videos is growing at a tremendous rate. Most of these videos are 5-10 minutes long and are presented by a wide variety of amateurs and professionals alike. Even though some of the videos are "hoaky", it's well worth the time to explore them. The information that they provide can advance your research with new tools and techniques that you can use everyday.
I have been following a family historian by the name of Robert Ragen. He has a couple of very interesting genealogy websites and has created hundreds of useful family tree research videos. The video that I included here demonstrates basic search techniques that you can use to discover internet based information about your family tree. The techniques he uses are based on the Google search engine. However, many of the techniques he uses are available on other search engines too.
Take a few minutes to watch this video. I think that you will agree with me that it's easy to follow and it effectively demonstrates the power of the internet. You'll be amazed at the variety of information that you can find right at your fingertips using these simple techniques. Take a few minutes to enter 'your-family-name genealogy OR "family tree" OR geneology' into your favourite search engine and see what clues to your heritage pops up.
I enjoy researching new tools and techniques and, more importantly I enjoy discovering my heritage.
