March 19, 2007 By: Richard Kearns Free Family Trees - You Don't Get Anything For Free!Free family trees are a myth! When you are just starting out you may think that the internet will provide you with an endless source of free research. It is true that much of the internet is free to access. However, all it takes is one 4 hour research session that uncovers exactly the same information that you researched 3 months ago for you to finally realize that "you don't get anything for free". The key to success is being prepared, organized and careful to record all details like names, birth and death dates and places, and most particularly the specific sources for each piece of genealogy information. Fortunately, many of the steps can be carried out for free. Genealogy searches can be done without having to pay any hard earned cash. Preparing your Family History worksheets, reviewing and organizing your family records can also be done without laying down any cash. Once your research has been organized you will be able to take advantage of any new information that you uncover. But there is more to it than just research and recording. You will soon discover that your time is very valuable too. Sometimes you will find that spending a little money will save you many hours of difficult research, or costly travel to other communities or countries. Many internet resources will provide access to information that has been researched before, either by one of your ancestors or even distant cousins. Taking advantage of these sources can be a very wise use of your money and save you lots of time. Check out my Name Origins page for more information about several research tools that are available and very reasonably priced. Being a family tree historian will take you well beyond researching and storing information about your ancestors. Building a solid understanding of the lives and times of your ancestors is really what genealogy is all about. Uncovering the stories of your ancestors, their triumphs and challenges, their highs and lows will bring them to life for you and your family for generations to come.
